Ben Franklin Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Ben Franklin - Essay Example 82). Franklin decided with these two sentences that he will respect other nation’s options but still the United States has its own conceptions to follow. Franklin also logically researched on a number of different thoughts on the diverse virtues, which he wanted to include locating the best description for his virtues list (Lauter et al. 82). "The Speech of Polly Baker," on the other hand, seems to be an optimistic and "amusing story". Nevertheless, Franklin presents a logical protest against a law, which punished females for out-of-wedlock sexual relations through whippings and imposing fines whereas the male of went without any penalty (Lauter et al. 94). Through the woman’s use of logical rhetorical questions to the judges, Franklin reveals the unfairness of the then U.S. justice system. Two examples include, â€Å"God has been pleased to add his divine Skill and admirable Workmanship in the Formation of their Bodies, and crown’d it by furnishing them with rational and immortal Souls?† and â€Å"You have already excluded me from all the Comforts of your Church Communion: Is not that sufficient† (Lauter et al.

The effect of mobile phones

The effect of mobile phones Introduction The life of human beings has changed a great deal in the past 10 years. One of the most life changing gadgets is the mobile phone which has allowed us to do so much. Mobile phones can be used to: leave notes for yourself and or for others Listening to music on the go Looking at pictures Taking pictures / Taking videos Making a video call Make phone calls from anywhere in the World Playing games Go on social networking sites ( Facebook, Bebo and MySpace) Surf the internet How does all this affect us (the users)? I am investigating the positive and negative effect of mobile phones on the user because mobile phones are used so much now and mobile phones are also known to cause some problems. Recently, the media have published stories linking mobile phones to the development of brain tumours. Positive Leaving notes for yourself and/or other people can be used in your business e.g. must look up how recycling has changed. Or used in your personal life e.g. put washing up away. Listening to music on the go is positive because it can help people to relax; some people believe that it helps them to walk/run faster; some people say it helps them to concentrate if they are revising. Looking at pictures is good because it entertains some people especially if its a funny picture, theres a saying that goes â€Å"right time right place† and to remember what happened e.g. meeting someone famous, some people take pictures on their mobile phones to be creative like photographers Taking pictures / videos is good because you can use it for evidence in accidents car crashes and in other crimes like in robberies to record what they were saying and or what they took and or what they are doing. Videos can also be used to record lovely events like a babys first steps. Do a video call is good because it is basically a mini web cam so you can contact anyone in a different country either for personal or professional reasons. Making phone calls is one of the most effective uses of a mobile phone because you can use your phone in different countries to ring anywhere in the World for either business uses or to make personal calls to family members and friends. Playing games is good because it gives you time to relax from your day and is a way of socialising with your friends and contacts. Negative The negative aspects of mobile phones include excessive use of text language can mean that some people have little idea on the correct spelling and grammar to use in normal writing. Also text language can be very confusing and some people may not be able to understand a message e.g. â€Å"hey il brb r u in 2day† which means â€Å"hey I will be right back, are you in today?† Listening to music on the go can have a negative effect because if someone is listening to music on their bike it might make it more relaxing to ride but it cuts you off from what is happening around you so you might not hear the siren of an emergency vehicle, or another road user sounding their horn as a warning and even traffic noise that would warn you that buses or lorries were near you. Looking at pictures is negative because it can distract people walking on the pavement and if they suddenly walk into the road they could cause an accident. Taking pictures/videos could be negative because someone could use them in activities such as crime and/ or violence related (e.g. happy slaps). Making a video call can be negative because it can be used anywhere which can distract people especially if its in a public place which is very busy e.g. Oxford street. The negative aspects of making phone calls is because it costs too much to make one phone call from one country to another country e.g. England to Australia would normally cost 50p upward for one minute and even to receive a phone call when you are abroad costs you money. Playing games can be negative because it can waste your time so much e.g. you will start to play a game at 10:00 am and the next time you check the time it could be 5:00 pm and you wonder where the time has gone to. Recently medical research has indicated that using a mobile phone can lead to the following illnesses particularly in young users: Brain tumour: a brain tumour can be caused by using a mobile phone for too long which can cause the brain to warm up Joint pains: Many mobile phone users complain of Neck pain, Thumb pain, Wrist pain and Elbow pain  · Damage to babies: damage to babies can be caused by a woman using a mobile phone when pregnant and putting the phone on her stomach it can cause hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships. * Memory loss: a university of Washington was researching on cell phones and they have discovered that rats exposed to cell phone microwaves suffer long-term memory loss Headaches: Headaches can be cause by putting your mobile phone on a loud volume when talking to someone and if youre listening to music with earphones in Scientists disagree on the effects of using mobile phones, some researchers suggest that mobile phones should come with a Government health warning but government officials from the Defence, Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) have advised the public â€Å"not to be alarmed by reports that mobile phones cause health problems† they stated that some experiments have been carried out on rats which indicated adverse health effects but that further research was necessary to produce evidence-based recommendations. However they also stated that it was sensible to reduce excessive use of mobile phones. After stating the positive and negative effects that using mobile phones can have on a persons way of life, I have made a technical drawing to show how I would improve the design of mobile phones so that the negative effects could be reduced and to boost the positive effects. HOW I WOULD CHANGE THE WAY MOBILE PHONES ARE DESIGNED I would change how mobile phones are designed because as I am doing products design A level, I can look at products with a critical eye. I decided to draw an exploded mobile phone. I will write what I would do or change: I would use Polymorph because it would be easier to use as the outer layer which means that you could shape it any way you want so it can be shaped like your fingers and or hands which should help people texting. I would use acrylic because it would be easy to use as the buttons and you can cut them out using a laser cutter which means they can be cut to any size and any shape (if it wasnt a touch screen phone) Instead of having a screen and a keypad i would make it so the phone was a touch screen so u can have it both qwerty (horizontal) and normal(vertical) pad

Sectionalism Versus Nationalism and the Era of Good Feelings Essay

After the war of 1812, there was a strong sense of nationalism since the young United States had won a war against the powerful British Army. However, the loss of thousands of southern slaves and the British embargo led both the north and the south to lament over the cost of the war. The time period from 1815 – 1825 that some historians call the era of good feelings was not as positive a time period as the title implies; factions ran rampant on the verge of causing an implosion for our country’s political system. The United States began to dissatisfy some of its citizens and so the concerns of sectionalism, or the split of the country began to arise. There was a continuous riff between the south and the north over a few issues, a major one being slavery. The south argued that the slaves were necessary to support the southern economy. According to document A, the south were angry that the north was creating taxes that hurt the southern economy, thus increasing the need for slavery since they had to make up for the expense of the taxes. The south felt that the north was able...

Effectiveness of Prisons

As early as 1974, criminal rehabilitation programs were already considered ineffective as far as reducing recidivism (or the act of a released convict to return to crime) is concerned. This belief was brought about by the fact that majority of the studies which were conducted for the purpose of evaluating the efficacy of various rehabilitation programs showed almost no positive or meager positive results. In an article entitled â€Å"What Works—Questions and Answers About Prison Reform,† Robert Martinson, a sociologist, cited statistics which proved that many of the rehabilitation programs being implemented in the country’s prisons failed to show encouraging results. He, however, registered some reservations, citing the poor methodology being employed in such studies at the time. According to him, it was also possible that because â€Å"our research [was] so bad,† the correct results of the studies were just not properly indicated. This perception somehow cha nged during the 1980s with the advent of â€Å"meta-analysis† – a new statistical technique which utilized larger sample sizes than those used by previous studies. This technique did manage to show that â€Å"vocational, educational, behavior modification and other programs† indeed had modest results which ranged from 10 – 15 percent reduction in recidivism (Himelson, 2008).Religious Rehabilitation ProgramsAt almost the same time that criminal rehabilitation programs were losing their credibility, the Humaita Prison in Brazil was being turned into a religious community. The practice caught the attention of Byron Johnson who was then the director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Research and Urban Civil Society because it gained international recognition. He found out that the day-to-day operations of the Humaita Prison were turned over to religious volunteers who â€Å"saturated the prison environment with religious programming and i nstruction.†In addition, family visits and spiritual mentoring were promoted. These innovative practices, Johnson learned, resulted to a recidivism rate of 16 percent after three years. This was much lower when compared to the recidivism rate of 36 percent which was registered by a different prison which offered vocational training to its inmates (Himelson, 2008).

Project Management Recommendation Essay

In response it is to your previous E-mail with the attention of the projects of Juniper, Palomino and Stargazer. The team is found and analyzed the three projects, assessed the risk that each project contains as well as returns on investment (ROI). There are many aspects one should think over when performing an investment decision. These may include the hypothesis of underlying the potential benefits and the ability to calculate and quantify the costs and benefits. However, the team concluded Stargazer Project in the best option comparing to other two projects. The logic behind for not selecting the other two projects is that juniper’s risk of completion of the project on time is low. While is Palomino not valued at with the medium risk of completion and the uncertainty of the costs of the products. The procedure used for reaching the decision was by utilizing the feasibility study. In addition to that, the feasibility study was based on the information observed the team durin g the initial stage of the project. This will define and summarize the findings of these projects in a way that supports sound decision making. The reason of introducing the feasibility study is to provide reliable analysis for the project that will make sense to the company in general. Furthermore, it will answer several important questions concerning of the project these may include length of the project, benefits and risks and Return on investment (ROI) to Piper Industries. Introducing the feasibility study for both Juniper and Palomino projects, materials introduced would not present as with the Stargazer model. Although is Stargazer carries the highest risk comparing the other projects. The team believes bases on the analysis that it provides accommodation for the project to perform high-risk, high- reward. After the actual risk of the project has been acknowledged, the project team estimates the risk based on the probability that may likely  happen, and the possible loss related with the project. To mitigate the risk the team will search an alternative to reduce the operating costs as its forecasted the derivative product will cost more. The fundamental decision of the big- picture is what mix of projects is best for the organization. A company must have the right mix of the projects that extremely assists the company’s strategy. This can be aligned Stargazer model because of the research and the development previously started for the new widgets as well the significant changes that will provide modern markets. (Jacobs & Chase, 2011). Break- Even Analysis Break – even analysis helps to provide reliable information between sales and profits as well as the costs. It also contributes an analysis the amount of success of the project must achieve. Finally, the approach presents to organizations a benchmark to compare a process or a project to what level of operating leverage will create better profits. However, comparing the projects’ Stargazer is the most likely project that will create the highest revenue. (Jacobs & Chase, 2011) The five phases of project planning A project is a set of activities that normally coordinate toward some major output and planned considerable period of time to carry out. In the meantime, project management is described as planning, directing, and controlling resources, which are the people, equipment and the material in order to meet the technical, cost and the limitations of the project. (Jacobs & Chase, 2011), There are five distinctive phases in project management that imply the stargazer model. First-Phase is the Project Conception and Initiation. The focal point of this phase is to secure the project that it is demonstrated into practical and will benefit the Piper Industries Corp. Second phase is project definition and planning. During this phase, the extent of the project will require an outline so the work which has to be performed is attainable. These may include activities that arrange budgets and timelines. Furthermore, planning incorporates the creation of clear and precise objectives defines the work  activities that have to be done in order achieve the planned objective. The purpose may necessitate the achievement of a condition that varies from the present one. Third Phase is the project execution. In this phase, the team must start executing the project against their assigned responsibilities. This phase is where every team member will start the task. It will coordinate the team and the resource to execute the different tasks of the project. Fourth Phase is the project controlling and Monitoring. In this phase of controlling the project manager must start monitoring the situation closely in order to make sure that the tasks are moving as it is planned. There are several ways to control the project this may involve a check – ins with team and more official weekly meeting, together with organized daily stand -ups are considered productive. (Jacobs & Chase, 2011) Project close when all the tasks of the project are approved the firm. The project is officially closed. The manager of the project must organize all the necessary information for future reference. Key Deliverables The Stargazer project is based on the content in order to meet clear deliverable in a matter for the firm to be successful and to consider the project beneficial. Researching and developing new widget and delivering such an innovative product to the market will help in the long-term strategy. References Chase, R. (2011).
